PRHS Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society

Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society Main Page Image

We will be petitioning to establish a chapter of the Mathematics Honor Society Mu Alpha Theta at PRHS this school year (2019-2020). In order to petition for a chapter, we need at least 5 learners to sign up to become members. The membership fee is $25 (membership fee and chapter t-shirt). In order to start this process, we need potential members to fill out the form found by clicking on the following link: https://forms.gle/6CZUo1t5vkLsoYYB7. Once all candidates are vetted, paperwork processed, and fees collected, we will apply for a chapter. Candidates will be notified once we have received acceptance by the Society. (Associates will only have to pay $15 for a chapter t-shirt.)

About the Honor Society

Mu Alpha Theta, the National High School and Two-Year College Mathematics Honor Society, was formed in 1957 at the University of Oklahoma. We are dedicated to inspiring a keen interest in mathematics, developing strong scholarship in the subject, and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics in high school and two-year college students. Currently, more than 124,000 students are Mu Alpha Theta members at more than 2,633 schools in the United States and in 23 foreign countries.

Mu Alpha Theta:

  • Provides a method for schools to recognize and encourage students who enjoy and excel in mathematics.
  • Organizes a national convention for students and teachers to participate in math-related events and interact with others from across the country.
  • Rewards outstanding extracurricular achievement by offering special awards, scholarships, and grants to students and their faculty advisers.
  • Provides mathematics competitions to participating members at their own school through the Log1 Contest, Rocket City Math League and the Mathematical Minutes Video Contest.

Members Requirements

The national requirements for individual membership in a local chapter are as follows. These are the minimum requirements; chapters may elect to have stricter standards but not lower ones. Students are encouraged to participate in Mu Alpha Theta club meetings and activities, even if they do not qualify as members:

  1. Members must be high school students in grades 9 through 12.
  2. Members must be registered with Mu Alpha Theta at the school at which their permanent records reside.
  3. Members must have completed the equivalent of two years of college preparatory mathematics, including algebra and/or geometry, and have completed or are enrolled in a third year of college preparatory mathematics.
  4. On the 4-point grading scale, members must have at least a 3.0 math grade point average.

Associates Requirements

Associates are not members of Mu Alpha Theta but are likely candidates for membership. Associates do not pay the initiation fee but are eligible to be listed with the National Office, should they wish to participate in Mu Alpha Theta national math contests. While they are not entitled to vote nor hold office in their chapter, they are entitled to attend and be heard at meetings. A student may remain an associate for only one year and then, if eligible, must be inducted as a member of Mu Alpha Theta.

  • Associates must be high school students in grades 9 through 12
  • Associates must be at the school where their permanent record resides.
  • Associates must have completed one year of algebra, or its equivalent, with distinction and are currently enrolled in a higher math course.
