Callie Barnett & Cate Quinn represent PRHS at Girls State 2026

Pike Road High School rising seniors Callie Barnett and Cate Quinn spent the first week of their summer gaining firsthand experience in government and leadership as representatives at Alabama Girls State, held from May 31 to June 5 at the University of Alabama.

Girls State is a premier leadership program that brings together rising senior girls from across Alabama to learn about our government by actively participating in it. Only two students from each high school (of our size) are selected to attend.

Throughout the week, participants were assigned to cities and political parties, where they campaigned for office, voted in elections, wrote legislation, and participated in legislative sessions. Students learned about every level of government, from city councils and mayors to state representatives, senators, and statewide offices.

Callie said one of the most valuable aspects of the experience was learning how government works through hands-on participation, and having to step outside of her comfort zone when meeting people and running for office.

“It was intimidating, but so encouraging,” she said. “I got to meet so many new people, while gaining a better understanding of how government works.”

Students also heard from state leaders and guest speakers, including Senator Katie Britt and Governor Kay Ivey, and discussed real-world issues affecting communities across Alabama. Topics ranged from education and agriculture to emerging technologies and their impact on rural areas.

For Cate, the experience provided a deeper understanding of the governmental process while also creating opportunities to connect with students from across the state.

“My biggest takeaway was learning more about how government works and all the processes that go on,” Cate said. “It was so fun, and I loved hearing from all the guest speakers and getting to meet a bunch of girls from all over Alabama.”

In addition to participating in elections and legislative sessions, students visited the Alabama State Capitol and learned more about civic leadership and public service.

While much of the week focused on government and leadership, students also had opportunities to connect with delegates from across the state through special events and activities. A patriotic "Star-Spangled Birthday Party," city skit performances, and the inaugural dinner gave participants time to celebrate, collaborate, and build friendships with fellow Girls State delegates.

Congratulations to Callie and Cate for representing Pike Road High School at Alabama Girls State and for embracing this unique opportunity to learn, lead, and serve.
